Dear Architecture Diary enthusiasts,

It’s already mid-November! Trusting you’re in good health, steering clear of colds, relishing the beauty of falling golden leaves, and discovering some moments of tranquillity in a month that tends to rush by.

Having lived in London for almost five years, I still try to stay connected to events in Istanbul, and this month promises a wealth of activities. Embracing opportunities to explore other cities, as we advocate in the Architecture Diaries, is a fantastic way to foster cross-cultural exchange.

With the year drawing to a close, I’m looking forward to a chance to visit Istanbul and partake in these incredible events. Yazgan Design Architecture has unveiled an exhibition titled “From the Effect of Architecture to the Knowledge of Architecture: 20 Years of Yazgan Design”. I remember from my early years studying architecture that one of their notable designs is the METU Modsim within the Middle East Technical University campus.

While my first suggestion leans towards architecture, the next one delves into the world of fashion. Beymen, a fashion brand celebrating its 50th anniversary, is presenting an exhibition called Golden Opulence. This multifaceted endeavour, advised by academia, art history, museum direction, and literature experts, promises a radical installation of pure lines at the historic Tophane-i Amire, produced by the renowned creative studio Bureau Betak.

Suppose you’re in the mood for a performance. In that case, Arter is hosting EarPort – a collaborative duo consisting of Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim – for an exceptional performance titled AtemWende [BreathTurn], drawing inspiration from Sarkis’ solo exhibition ENDLESS. The aim is to create a self-contained breathing space within an ever-changing environment where new values persistently emerge.

Zooming back to the city scale, an exhibition curated by Emre Zeytinoğlu titled “Where is the City?” is grounded in the city’s current reality. Additionally, there are talks within the exhibition, such as Prof. Dr. Murat Güvenç’s discussion on “What Happened within the City’s Boundaries Over Time.”

Lastly, my recommendation from Ankara is an exhibition of Nejad Devrim: Un Soleil Perdu Dans l’Orage, held in one of the city’s esteemed gallery Galeri Nev. Devrim’s focus on the iconic landmarks of the cities he has visited allows us to recognise and name some of them.
