We are not alone: A Panicattack Duo Retrospective, 2054

Panicattack Duo: Naz Balkaya and Emily Demetriou‘s exhibition and performance series “We are not alone: a Panicattack Duo Retrospective, 2054″, curated by Performistanbul (Simge Burhanoğlu & Azra İşmen), will open at Performistanbul on September 15.

Performistanbul is excited to meet the audience with a comprehensive exhibition after a long break. The preparations for the performative exhibition that will run for four months at Performistanbul have been going on for three years. The exhibition and performances, which are designed to offer a glimpse into an imagined future retrospective, were scheduled to open in April 2023, but have been postponed to September due to the difficult times in Turkey.

The duo, who seek the path of feminine knowledge and marginalized practices and believe that this is the solution to their problems, present their first series of works after the pandemic, “We are not alone: Panicattack Duo Retrospective, 2054” spanning three floors of Performistanbul. In addition to live performances, the performative exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, mixed media works, and an installation composed of video and sound. The entire installation, which comes alive with the performances, chronologically exhibits the fictitious works of the duo throughout their artistic careers, while also revealing the political and historical events of the period. Performing within the installation, the artists hope to create an immersive dystopian experience of their imagined future for the audience who will follow a storyline that takes them through a journey from 2021 to 2054.

The story will be narrated through a sound piece which is recounting and leading the viewer through climate destruction, extreme far right and patriarchal politics that are rising and threatening everyone’s lives. The audience will experience the installation floor to floor; with each floor exposing situations and happenings from a different decade. Parallely, the public can observe the process the duo is endorsing, in order to maintain their sanity and survive this world.

We are not alone: a Panicattack Duo Retrospective, 2054 is a hope for breath, a reminder to remember, a call for action , a rehearsal for the future, an invitation to come together and a tribute to the wild, untamed soul and to the feminine. We welcome you to join us for this transformative experience bridging imagination and reality.

The exhibition is open for viewing through December 31, 2023.

About the exhibition and performances:

There will be 22 performances throughout the duration of the exhibition. The performances will take place on the following dates:

September 15, September 16, September 17, September 21, September 22, September 23, September 24, September 28, September 29, September 30, October 1

December 15, December 16, December 17, December 21, December 22, December 23, December 24, December 28, December 29, December 30, December 31

Each performance will have a capacity of 35 people. The performance will start at 15:00 on weekends and at 19:00 on weekdays. Ticket prices are 250 TL.

The exhibition will be open every week Thursday-Friday-Saturday-Sunday between 12.00-18.00 and can be visited in 1-hour sessions. Each session will have a capacity of 50 people and 4 sessions (12:00-13:30-15:00-16:30) will be held daily. Ticket prices are 80 TL.
