Dilruba Balak and Anna F Schwarz will open their joint exhibition “In Between Things – do we have more?” on Wednesday, 6th of September at 5533.
Two artists met, when Dilruba Balak’s studies was cancelled, due to a wrongful eviction of Austrian authorities in 2019. Anna F Schwarz reached out to her and the two came together for the first time in Istanbul last year. The collaboration journeyed through conversations, a linked working process to exploring the opposition that united them. A series of drawings, sculptures, and paintings were created and this layout flowed into the work of two large scale portrait paintings, which are currently exhibited at the Austrian Cultural Forum Istanbul.
For the exhibition at 5533, existing material has been processed, contextualized, and transferred and a new series of sculptures are created. The project brings different earths together. Clay from Vienna has been transported to Istanbul and processed into sculptures with clay from Heybeliada, the new home of Dilruba Balak. The project also discusses the possibility of connection and understanding in an increasingly fragmented world. The raw material clay can symbolize the potential for change and transformation in a time of political complexity and social divisions.
The exhibition will be open to visitors between September 6-16, every day except Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm.
